Description

Music : Rock : Lossless

Arson City is a five piece hard rock group based out of Omaha, Nebraska. While it may not seem like much comes out of the state aside from corn, Dorothy Lynch dressing, and cinnamon rolls with chili (seriously, what?), there is a burgeoning music scene there that is being led by the stars of this review. The band got started in 2013, led by former Emphatic frontman Patrick Michael Wilson. Admittedly, that’s how I found them myself, as I caught Emphatic opening for Halestorm in 2012. They’ve since released two EPs in Arson City and Not Coming Home. A few months ago, after writing six new songs and planning a third, they decided, “why not re-record one song from the former and remaster four from the latter and release a full album?” One issue, however, that could come from such a plan is when combining songs written in different eras (and in this case, with a new guitarist joining after the recording of Not Coming Home), an album can come off as disjointed, lacking in focus or flow. So does the group’s first full-length fall into that trap? Well, if you’ve already looked at the score (cheater!) you know the answer, but let’s give it a gander, shall we?

Often times, when an artist has a concept, it runs the risk as coming off as cheesy or gimmicky. But when the band makes that concept part of their identity, it transforms into something more – something bigger than the individual members. Think of Arson City as not so much a band, but an entity. A singular consciousness that paints a picture, trapping its soul in the canvas. The Horror Show is that canvas, their instruments are the brush, and the entity is the painter.

The album starts out with the title track and first single, a song which dances around the biggest question one might have going in blind: what is The Horror Show? Blending equal parts masterfully crafted guitar riffing with pounding rhythms and just the right amount of accentuating electronics, the track is everything that is Arson City all at once. Much like an athlete who becomes one with the field or court, you can feel the group dissolving into a fiery cauldron of hard rock over the track’s runtime. New to existing fans will be the guitar solos present in four of the six new songs on the album, provided courtesy of new guitarist Matt DiBiase. His leads fit right in like they were always meant to be, adding another new layer to the extra-thick parfait of a group. You ever meet anybody that doesn’t like parfait? No, you have not.

Speaking of existing fans, I mentioned that five of the songs here are from the two previous EPs. First, “Frankenstein”, “Not Coming Home”, “Too Close”, and “City Of Fire” are all from the Not Coming Home EP. These are the same recordings that appeared on that effort, but with a remastering that makes them all feel fresh again. One glaring issue the previous EP had was random volume drops, such as during the intro to “City Of Fire”. Not only has this been rectified, but the new mastering makes the songs sound much better, as the vocals are cleaner, the guitars punchier, the bass, umm, bassier, and the drums…well, you get the point. They sound damn good, is what I’m saying. However, the highlight of the old material is “I’m Awake”, the first single from the self-titled EP. The song was completely re-recorded and thus sounds significantly better than the muddy tracking on the old version, but in addition, the vocals were tweaked slightly to give the cut more power, and to good effect.

I could go on and on for two-thousand words telling you what’s great about this album. “My Perfect Drug” is catchier than the common cold. “Dance With The Devil” will make you want to, well, dance. “Let’s Get This Fire Started” is pure metal wonderfulness. “New Disease” is a clinic on using synthesized strings in a hard rock song. But beyond all that, special mention goes to album closer “Lies”. It’s not the best song on the disc, but from the creepy, symphonic intro, the song perfectly encapsulates how to both carry your concept within the music, and finish up a record. If The Horror Show actually were a show, this would be playing during the end credits, telling you that it’s time to go…if you dare.

Will you? Time and spins will tell, but let’s ask the Magic 8 Ball…

“All signs point to no.”

It has spoken.... Arson City has come in and crafted one of the best records I’ve heard in years. The riffing is top notch, the electronics are used to bolster the songs without overpowering them, and Patrick Wilson’s vocals drip ferocity while also hooking you in harder than a Vegas red light district, and he’s able to switch back and forth on command. Go listen to the album. You can thank me later. I’ll be waiting.
