Jackson, Mississippi. Het is de 19de eeuw en slavenhandel is volop aan de gang in Amerika. Twee geliefden, Django (Jamie Foxx) en Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), worden onder deze gruwelijke omstandigheden uit elkaar gedreven en verkocht aan verschillende eigenaren. Terwijl Broomhilda haar nieuwe situatie leefbaar probeert te maken wordt Django ondertussen bevrijd door een eigenaardige premiejager genaamd Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Deze ziet wel potentie in Django en besluit hem onder zijn vleugel te nemen en hem de fijne kneepjes van het vak te laten zien. Na een aantal succesvolle premies samen te hebben geïnd besluit Django op zijn eigen pad te gaan en zijn geliefde Broomhilda terug te vinden. Dit blijkt achteraf moeilijker te zijn dan gedacht nu zij in het bezit is van Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), een meedogenloze plantage-eigenaar die berucht is om de vreselijke slavenpraktijken die hij erop nahoudt op zijn privéterrein genaamd ?Candyland.?
