that seductive lethal blow. When Juan writes, try to imagine who he’s smiling at. In his veins and in his words
pulse the vicissitudes of Lazarillo, the equivocal semi-consciousness of a gaucho Don Quixote, the erotic playfulness of
both Boccaccio and the Archpriest of Hita, the exemplary fable of Quiroga, Borges’ infinite gaze, the cavernous
dreams of Julio Cortazar and always, foremost in his encrypted smile, the fatal seduction of Don Juan—that
lorquian presage of silver emerging on night’s balcony.
  Juan’s work comes to us from the United
States, a country whose Spanish literary tradition will surely stimulate the explosion of his future endeavors. With
this book, Miranda has laid a small egg, at first glance, discrete, but in whose interior booms the potency of a
creature far from negligible. Seven short stories speak to us, detailing enormous histories—tremendous
histories—openly and with a subtly that continues to resonate long after their end is reached. Made of sound
stock, these narrations propel the reader on a continuous journey where surprises are repeatedly uncovered: the stories
expose their own recesses, amplifying with each glance their own micro-universe of suggestions, placing them in line
with the best of literary traditions. The themes are, in effect, quite varied, although you might be able to detect the
author’s constant preoccupation with the concept of justice, the loss of innocence, the deceitful legitimacy of
vengeance or a strictly irrational violence, in addition to a very “story-teller” interest in unforeseen
action and surprises.
  In his stories you’ll find conclusions unique to typical literary archetypes, for
example, the classic love triangle, jealousy and infidelity (“The Blue House Roulette”, “The
Spy”, and “The Red Cake”). The author end other narrations tittering on the edge of micro-stories with
a swift blow of an axe (“Fish”) or an almost photographic shutter-speed of a singular instant
(“Oblivion”). In “The Karma of the Idiots”, Miranda displays his refined irony and intelligent
humor by reviving the allure of the fable placing this anecdote within one of the most demanding of literary currents.
Lastly “Ludic”, a microscopic bildungsroman leaves us wanting more while the collection as a whole leaves us
with the sensation of having read more stories, more histories, of having learned and of having surpassed our ethical
parameters.
  This collection of stories is a promise within itself. My advice is: open the door. Let yourself
smile and see what kind of creature hatches from this little egg, laid with such care and with such excitement on the
bookshelves of a Country that has tended to underestimate literature in Spanish. Vale.
