In recognition of their extreme scarcity and tremendous value, I present the complete series of
recordings of the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan as originally broadcast on the BBC in 1966. The great merit of
these broadcasts, in addition to the outstanding talent assembled and the generally high quality of the series, is that
each performance is musically more or less complete and contain the entire unabridged spoken dialogue
(whereas only a handful of the famous D'Oyly Carte series on the Decca label in the 1960s included dialogue). For this
latter reason I have elected to post this series under the heading of audiobook so that W. S. Gilbert's
consistently witty and extraordinarily clever dialogue will reach a wider audience who might otherwise be put off by the
appellation of opera. Needless to say, the music of Arthur Sullivan (like Gilbert's contribution) remains as
captivating and ingenious as when originally composed. As there are many recordings of the complete operas that exclude
the spoken dialogue, I thought it proper to (initially, at least) direct this torrent to those with a particular
interest in the dramatic arts. 

Full credit for the creation of these files does not belong to me, however.
The work of encoding was done by others. My only contribution was to carefully tag each file with the relevant

The BBC Complete Broadcasts

In 1966, the BBC undertook
the massive task of recording and broadcasting all of the extant Gilbert and Sullivan operas with complete dialogue. The
operas were broadcast on the BBC Third Programme on Sundays at noon, one every two or three weeks. The series was then
repeated in late 1967/early 1968. The BBC recruited excellent casts, headed by former D'Oyly Carte patter baritone Peter
Pratt. Only a few other singers with D'Oyly Carte experience participated, but most of the artists had top-flight light
opera credentials.

Most of the operas in the 1966 series were conducted by Stanford Robinson. Some years
later, he told a meeting of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society that he had carefully corrected the orchestra parts D'Oyly
Carte provided, rectifying many inconsistencies, traditional “wrong notes,” and other errors. Afterwords the
D'Oyly Carte, far from expressing any gratitude for his efforts, carefully removed all his annotations and sent him a
bill for the clean-up.

One oddity of the series was the casting of different performers in the music and the
dialogue (for most parts, at any rate). At the same Gilbert and Sullivan Society meeting, Stanford Robinson explained
that the music and dialogue were recorded at different sessions, and for the latter, actors were used because they were
cheaper than singers. As Michael Walters observed, “Presumably those (like Peter Pratt) who did both dialogue and
music were those who were willing to be paid a lower rate for the dialogue sessions.” Leon Berger added that most
of the the actors used were already in the BBC repertory company and may have been on retainer.

On a personal
note I will add that several of these broadcasts are for me the most wholly successful recordings available of certain
of the operas, due to the high standard of performance, the clarity of diction and the dramatic talent of those tasked
with performing the spoken dialogue. To any such large-scale endeavor there are exceptions, however; but I will leave it
to the individual listener to determine which of the performances are of particular merit whereas others are not.
